Introduction CGISpy.com offers a wide range of hosted CGI services. Thirty seven different scripts in total ranging from Auction scripts to Domain Whois searches. They also offer all the ‘standard’ scripts you’d expect from a CGI host including guestbook software, powerful statistics program and chat software. Remotely hosted CGI means that CGISpy.com hold the software on their server/web site, members can then link to it using special code. This allows people who’s servers don’t support CGI to use CGI scripts. Signup The signup process is very quick and extremely easy, it only takes a few minutes. Just answer a few questions and give them some personal details and you’re away. You’re then given login details which instantly sets you up to login and set up the scripts for your site. Getting Started The members area makes setting everything up very quick and painless. The site gives you all the code you need to get going and you can be using the scripts within a matter of minutes. Some require a second registration but this is very quick and painless. Customisation All the scripts are very customisable in the basic functionality and look of the scripts but obviously as their are lots of people using the same scripts, full on customisation is not available. However, the overall ability to modify the scripts to suit your needs is very good. Upgrading CGISpy.com have recently started offering a paid service. For $7 a month or $79 a year you are provided with priority customer support and you get the annoying adverts/banners removed from the scripts. Advertising Due to the main service provided by CGISpy.com being free they have to put adverts on their sites. Though annoying, this is quite understandable and I think fair enough. Sadly a lot of remotely hosted services are having to turn to paid advertising as they slowly have to close down due to cash flow problems. The Agum Network shut down in early May due to similar problems. If you’re not willing to pay for the ad free service, CGISpy.com offer two options. The banner option where they put a advertising banner on all the script pages and the pop-up option which pops a smaller window advert up on the users screen. It’s down to personal preference though I personally get very irritated by pop-up windows. The Scripts The scripts in general are all very customisable and easy to use. Due to their being thirty seven I chose to review a couple of the more impressive and useful ones. The statistics script is very powerful and offers some very useful and easy to understand statistical information. All results are displayed in an easy to understand format. Logging is done by placing a small button on your web page which links to CGISpy.com. Every time it’s loaded the visit is logged. The advert is a reasonable sacrifice for such vital information in my opinion. The voting booth system is also a very useful and handy piece of software. Polls are easy to set-up and offer the ability to add up to four different options. The interface is very attractive and extremely simple to understand. Set-up is a 20 second job involving you entering a few poll details and then the code is all automatically generated. The small form to the right of this text is an example of a CGISpy.com poll, give it a try! Conclusion Overall CGISpy.com is one of the best remotely hosted CGI services on the Internet and offers a huge range of scripts for your site. All in all it’s extremely easy to use, understand, set-up and maintain and I would probably recommend this service over any other remotely hosted CGI server offering a similar range of scripts. |
