YaBB
Introduction
YaBB claims to be a feature-packed, secure, bug-free, and beautiful bulletin board. But can this script live up to the hype?

Overview

I have known about YaBB ever since it was started. I've always been a fan because I like the fact that it is a free and open source alternative to UBB. Never before has it been able to stand up to its competition like it can now. It is almost overwhelming how powerful this script is. Once you get it going, there's no looking back. It pretty much runs itself and there are no bugs that I'm aware of. But don't think there aren't any advanced options. You can change all the intricacies of the script from a web based admin centre.

Features

I could go on and on about the features of YaBB. First and foremost it is a bulletin board system that can handle multiple boards. There is search, member lists, powerful admin, instant messaging, and much more. Members of the board can even edit or delete posts they've made! YaBB has all the features you'll ever need.

Installation

When you first download it, it's a little bit surprising how big it is. It's almost half a megabyte! But once you fire up your browser and get to the easy to navigate manual, you forget all that. The manual is huge and there is nothing left out of it. The entire installation consists of setting some variables, and then uploading the files. Another nice feature is that ancient versions of YaBB can be upgraded very easily, even easier than installing the script for the first time. I know this from personal experience. I had been putting off upgrading my YaBB because I thought it would be a long and painful process, if it would even work at all. When this new version came out, I figured I might as well give it a shot. Boy, was I surprised when I realized how simple it was to upgrade from a version of YaBB from almost a year ago! Overall, the installation can be a little confusing if you haven't installed many scripts before, but if you stick with it and follow the directions it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Administration

The admin is completely web based and you can edit all the settings you'll ever need to. You'll never have to edit a config file on your computer and upload it, you can do everything in the comfort of your browser. You can edit the template, view the access log, email members, create member groups, edit categories, edit boards, reserve names, set preferences, censor words, check for new versions of the script, and view your board's stats. What more can I say?

Modification

Even if you don't know Perl, you can modify this script using a program called BoardMod. You just download it and pick the mods you want, and it changes the script to suit your needs. If you want to do it yourself, the board is very organized. Different features of the script are easy to find in the Sources directory, so you can change just what you want without muddling through thousands of lines of code.

Support

Where else would you find support for this excellent bulletin board script than at YaBB's own support board? There are many very experienced people there. You'll usually get an answer within a couple hours.

Conclusion

Powerful, easy to use, well documented, and pretty good looking as well. In a world with hundreds of bulletin board scripts to choose from, this is definitely a top-notch bulletin board script that I would recommend to everyone.
